Charles Stetson (1801-1863) a U.S. Representative, was born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire on November 2, 1801. He moved with his parents to Hampden in 1802, attended Hampden Academy and was graduated from Yale College in 1823.

He studied law, was admitted to the bar and began his practice in Hampden in 1826. He was also admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1828. Stetson held various local offices, then moved to Bangor in 1833 and served as judge of the Bangor Municipal Court 1834-1839.

A member of the common council of Bangor in 1843 and 1844, he became a member of the State Executive Council 1845-1848. Elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1851), Stetson was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1850.

He resumed the practice of law, affiliated with the Republican Party in 1860, and died in Bangor March 27, 1863, with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
