1815 John Chandler who served in Congress 1820-1823; 1823-1825; 1825-1829 as a Democratic-Republican, Crawford Republican, and a Jacksonian, dies. A member of the 1819 Maine Constitutional Convention, he was the Maine Senate’s first President.
1861 Stockton-built vessel Joseph Park is captured by Confederate raiders.
1955 Emma “Grandma” Gatewood is the first woman, and only the second person, to through hike aline the full Appalachian Trail, as she summits Mount Katahdin.
