1897 Birth date in Skowhegan of Republican U.S. Senator (1949-1973) Margaret Chase Smith and officially designated as Margaret Chase Smith Day, which “shall commemorate and honor Margaret Chase Smith who distinguished herself as a political leader of this nation and as one of Maine’s outstanding citizens.” (1 MRSA Chapter 5)

Passenger rail service reinstated in Maine with an inaugural trip from Boston to Portland, soon reaching to Brunswick.
2006 Katahdin Lake parcel in T3 R8 is acquired by Baxter State Park after a $14 million fundraising campaign by the Trust for Public Land in cooperation with the Department of Conservation.
