Denmark

Moose Pond in Denmark (2012)

Pleasant Mountain rises 2,006 feet among adjoining ridges and peaks. See photos. A hiking trail offers access and views of the surrounding countryside and of Moose Pond. Settled 1788 and incorporated 1807 in Oxford County, the town’s western line is the Saco River.

Dennysville

Cobscook Bay (2004)

is in eastern Washington County, settled 1786 and incorporated 1818. While using tidal power to generate electricity was to emerge in the 20th century, direct tidal power was at work in 1886, supporting lumber mills and a grist mill on the Denny’s River.

Detroit

The East Branch of the Sebasticook River flows through the village on its way to Sebasticook Lake in Newport. See photos. Several mills used it water power in the 19th century. Incorporated 1828 in Somerset County as Chandlerville, the name was changed to Detroit in 1841.

Dexter

Downtown Dexter (2002)

A woolen mill, erected in 1835, started an industry that lasted for over 150 years. See photos. Recent manufacturing firm closings contributed to the decline in population in the 1990-2000 decade. Settled 1800, incorporated 1816 in Penobscot County, it is the birthplace in 1888 of legislator, congressman, governor, and U.S. Senator Ralph Owen Brewster.

Dingley, Nelson Jr.

(1832-1899) a U.S. Representative was born in Durham on February 15, 1832. He attended the common schools at Unity, Waterville Seminary, and Waterville College, now Colby College. Dixfield

Dr. Elijah Dix bought the town (and Dixmont); his granddaughter was social reformer Dorothy Dix. See video and photos. Inventor Leonard Norcross was a resident in the early 19th century. The town town in Oxford County incorporated in 1803.

Dixmont

Peaked Mountain from U.S. 202 in Dixmont (2003)

in Penobscot County, incorporated 1807, was named for Dr. Elijah Dix, who bought the town (and Dixfield). His granddaughter was the social reformer, Dorothea Lynde Dix. Maine Routes 9 and U.S. Route 202 pass through Dixmont and Dixmont Center villages, with long views of the surrounding area, and locally known “Dixmont Hill,” actually Peaked Mountain, with its communications antennas. Dresden

Kennebec River at the Pownalborough Court House, (2010)

is site of the 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse, the first built in Maine, visited by future President John Adams, Daniel Webster, and Benedict Arnold on his way to Quebec. The Earle R. Kelley Wildlife Management Area and the Dresden Bog are here in the area first settled in 1752.

Drew Plantation

Its eastern portion is dominated by the Mattawamkeag River System Wildlife Management Area. Recreational opportunities include boating, canoeing, and wildlife viewing for eagles, osprey, deer, moose and water birds. The 6,800 plus acre parcel includes Mud Pond. In 1921 Drew was incorporated as a town, but in the depths of the Great Depression it reverted to a plantation.

Dunlap, Robert P.

(1794-1859) a U.S. Representative, was born in Brunswick on August 17, 1794, was educated by private tutors and was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1815. Dunn, David

(1811-1894) was born in Cornish on January 17, 1811. Where he received whatever formal education he possessed remains a mystery but we do know that he studied law under then future Governor, “Squire” John Fairfield, of Saco. Dunn was admitted to the bar in 1833 and shortly thereafter opened up a practice at Poland Corner.…

Durham

Durham Community School on the Royalsborough Road (2013)

The 1835 Union Church was a community meeting house, then in 1922, the Town Office, and recently home of the Durham Historical Society. The early 20th century religious movement known as the Sandfordites, after their leader Frank W. Sandford, built their 1897 temple “Shiloh” here. Runaround Pond offers a pleasant canoe trip through water lilies and bird life. See video and photos.

Dyer Brook

Dyer Brook, incorporated in 1891, so named for the stream that flows through it and into the Mattawamkeag River, is in the heart of potato country. See photos. This sparsely populated rural town has no paved roads, other than U.S. Route 2. An extensive bog occupies the middle of the township.
