The Encyclopedia has made substantial improvements in 2019. First, the development of “suggested search terms” with over 100 keywords leading to thousands of articles. The keywords have been reduced to single words to work easily on PC and IOS platforms.

Hundreds of links within the Encyclopedia have been added, now totaling 3,000, connecting to additional relevant articles and providing context to the Maine experience.

Hundreds of headline photos have been added to quickly alert the reader to the text in the article. Overall, more than 10,000 images of Maine towns and townships illustrate the nature of our urban, rural, coastal and forest resources.

The Encyclopedia began in 2000 with a few hundred articles distributed by CD-ROM. Over the years it expanded to DVD’s to accommodate more articles, videos, and higher resolution still images. Since July 2012 it has been available free on the Internet!

In 2017 it had over 2,000 articles, including over 900 articles on individual cities, towns, plantations, and townships; and 300 brief biographical sketches of Maine artists, authors, and politicians; over 5,000 “additional resources,” references in articles; 8,200 original still photos and 1,400 from other sources..

250 brief videos/slide presentations are integrated into the articles, along with 700 graphic charts. The 7,000+ internal links connect people with events, places, people, etc.
