(1793-1880), grandfather of Charles Franklin Sprague (a U.S Representative from Massachusetts 1897-1901), was a himself a Representative and a U. S. Senator from Maine
Charles Sprague was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts on April 27, 1793. He graduated from Harvard University in 1812, studied law at Litchfield, Connecticut, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and began his practice in Augusta, Maine.
He moved to Hallowell, in 1817, continued the practice of law, and became a member, Maine House of Representatives (1821-1822). Sprague was a corporate member of the Maine Historical Society, which was formed in 1822.
Elected to the Nineteenth, Twentieth, and Twenty-first Congresses, he served from March 4, 1825, until his resignation, effective March 3, 1829, having been elected to the United States Senate as an Anti-Jackson candidate. He served from March 4, 1829 to January 1, 1835, when he resigned.
Sprague again resumed the practice of law, this time in Boston in 1840. He was a presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1840 and United States district judge of Massachusetts 1841-1865. He died in Boston, Massachusetts on October 13, 1880 with interment in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
