Camp at Spectacle Pond (1990)

Access to the pond is on unimproved roads beginning in Blanchard Village off the Abbot Road trending southwest for about four miles until turning right at Thanksgiving Pond Road. In about a mile, park road vehicles. Follow a rough road/trail for about a half mile with off-road vehicles or by hiking.

This Spectacle Pond in Piscataquis County’s Blanchard Township is one of at least six other Spectacle Ponds in Maine: in King and Bartlett Township, in Somerset County; Porter Township in Oxford County; Vassalboro and Augusta in Kennebec County; Osborn Plantation in Hancock County; and T10 R8 WELS in Aroostook County.

The 60-acre Spectacle Pond is in an isolated spot, not often visited, in the southwest corner of the township. (Blanchard Village underlined at right.) The Pond consists of two separate, shallow basins separated by a narrow thoroughfare. The forest extends right to the shoreline around most of the pond. One small camp has been there since the early 20th century. The owners invited visitors to share the quiet, the fishing, and the good-natured conversation over card games.
