David Hammons (1808-1888) a U.S. Representative, was born in Cornish on May 12, 1808 and attended the common schools. He studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced practice in Lovell.
A member of the Maine State Senate in 1840 and 1841, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849). He continued the practice of law until his death in Bethel on November 7, 1888, with interment in Woodland Cemetery.
