Richmond

The main village is located on the west side of the Kennebec River, just south of Gardiner on Maine Route 24, where the river splits to form Swan Island. See photos.Benedict Arnold’s expedition, having first landed at Swan Island in the river across from the town, passed by the remnants of Fort Richmond. The town has a substantial collection of grand houses, including several Greek Revival specimens. Peacock Beach State Park is near the historic Peacock Tavern on U.S. Route 201.

Riley TWP

a township in Oxford County, just north of the town of Gilead on the border with New Hampshire. It is home to no lakes, few people, several mountains in the Mahoosuc Range, and the source of Sunday River. It is the entry point for the Appalachian Trail in Maine in a section of the state’s Public Reserved Land. From here it is 281.4 miles to go to reach the summit of Mount Katahdin.

Roque Bluffs

Located south of Machias, the community has a long coastline on its Great Cove, Englishman Bay and Little Kennebec Bay. Roque Bluffs State Park occupies about two miles of the shore. Inland from the park is the Englishman River Wildlife Management Area along the eastern shore of that river.

Saco

One half of the Biddeford-Saco metropolitan area, the city has its own extensive beach and Ferry Beach State Park. See photos. It is one stop on AMTRAK’s Downeaster rail service. Occupying the east side of the Saco River as it enters Saco Bay, the city is the eleventh largest community in Maine.

Sandy River Plantation

About 35 miles northwest of Farmington on Maine Route 4, just south of Rangeley, the community marks the source of the Sandy River in the Sandy River Ponds. See map, video and photos. Four Ponds Public Reserve Land lies just east of Mooselookmeguntic Lake. Access is by the Appalachian Trail off Route 4 in Sandy River.

Scarborough

A suburb of Portland, the rapidly growing community now ranks as tenth most populous in Maine according to the 2000 U.S. Census, up from 13th place in 1990, having grown almost 36 percent in ten years. See photos. The Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area is managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in a federal-state partnership program. The town’s fine beaches and the Scarborough Downs race track and off-track betting facility are attractions for many.

Silver Ridge TWP

Silver Ridge was, once a plantation from 1878 to the 1950s, in Aroostook County, immediately south of Sherman and east of Benedicta Township. Its small and declining population was likely a major factor in surrendering its organization.
