Abol, Chimney Pond, Daicey Pond, Katahdin Stream, Kidney Pond, Nesowadnehunk Field, Roaring Brook, Russell Pond, South Branch Pond, and Trout Brook Farm are the major campsites in Baxter State Park.
Chimney Pond and Russell Pond are not accessible by automobile. The south entrance provides access to Abol, Daicey Pond, Katahdin Stream, Kidney Pond, Nesowadnehunk Field, Roaring Brook campgrounds. South Branch Pond and Trout Brook Farm are best accessed through the north (Mattagammon) gate.
Remote Campsites and Group Camping Areas provide additional options. Each has its unique atmosphere and perspective on the mountain — Katahdin.
All campgrounds require reservations for overnight accommodations, which include cabins, bunkhouses, lean-tos, and tent sites. The wise visitor sends reservation requests to the Park office in early January. Through 2004, prospective campers literally camped out in Millinocket hoping to be among the first to secure their favorite campsite or cabins at their preferred dates.Since then the Park has instituted a new reservation system, which includes online, telephone, and in-person applications.
