1774 First Continental Congress convenes in Philadelphia
1813 Capture of the British brig Boxer by the American brig Enterprise off Portland during the War of 1812.
1905 Treaty of Portsmouth, ending the Russo-Japanese War, is signed at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard in Kittery.
1918 Shipwreck of the two-masted schooner Herman F. Kimball on Long Point on Cape Elizabeth. Most of its cargo of lumber was saved but not the ship.
1924 The “United State Army Round the World Aviators after starting westward from Seattle, Washington April 6, 1924 made their first landing on the soil of the United States.” Quote from a bronze tablet erected at Mere Point in Brunswick where that landing took place, according to the Kennebec Journal of June 8, 1925.
