1816 Voters support statehood for Maine 12,007 to 10,382, but fail to get the 5/9 majority required by Massachusetts.
1830 Birth date in Lewiston of U.S. Senator (1881-1911) William P. Frye, who also served as Maine Attorney General from 1867 to 1869.
1960 John Kennedy is the first Democratic presidential candidate since 1932 to visit Bangor. He then travels to Presque Isle and Portland.
