1846 Henry David Thoreau leaves Bangor heading north to Mount Katahdin.
1857 Maine State Seminary, now Bates College, opens.
1906 The schooner Annie L. Henderson burns from a fire started on a Bangor dock. Blown to the Brewer side, it was towed to the middle of the Penobscot.
1948 Birth date in Rockland of David F. Emery, Congressman (1975-1983) and Deputy Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.
