These pigeon-like birds visit home bird feeders, feasting mostly on seeds that drop to the ground. They remain year-round within about 40 miles of the coast. In summer they may be found in all but northern Piscataquis, Somerset and Aroostook (western portion) counties.
The doves are ground feeders in the wild and measure 12 inches from beak to its somewhat long, thin tail. The male has a bit more color around the neck, but otherwise the two sexes are very similar in appearance. They mate for life, which ranges from seven to ten years
Most states allow the hunting of these birds, , but not Maine, partially because they are not densely populated here.
The mourning dove is so-named because of its “coo-ing” call that appears to express sadness.
