Maine came under enemy attack as sailors from the Confederate navy sailed up the coast and boarded the Union revenue cutter Caleb Cushing for a raid on Portland harbor.

U.S. Supreme Court rules state “clean election” funds cannot be used to match a “clean” candidate’s opponent’s higher election spending, thus crippling the Maine law and reducing the number of candidate’s using public financing instead of taking private contributions.
