1804 Birth date of Nathaniel Hawthorne, author and resident of Casco
1827 John Baker defiantly raises an American flag at the confluence of Baker Brook and the St. John River in the disputed boundary area between Maine and Canada, an early prelude to the Aroostook War.
1829 Cornerstone for Capitol Building in Augusta laid.
1861 Milbridge-built vessel Cuba and Machias-built Machias are captured by Confederate raiders.
1866 One-third of Portland is destroyed by fire. Thousands are homeless with $12 million in property losses.
