Locomotives (2019)

Not to be confused with the town of Eagle Lake  in Aroostook County, Eagle Lake Township lies to the southwest in Piscataquis County. It too has frontage on another waterbody named Eagle Lake and includes part of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and a small portion of Chamberlain Lake.

A narrow stretch of Maine Public Reserved Land between Chamberlain Lake and Eagle Lake was once the site of a tramway and a short rail line transporting logs from Eagle Lake to  Chamberlain Lake a distance of three quarters of a mile. It was abandoned in 1907 after A. O. Lombard’s log hauler made it obsolete. It is now a historic site with much of the old machinery and locomotives visible.  Details and more photos are in the Greenville article. The map below points to the Trestle built in 1926 that carried a steam railroad and logs across the narrow Allagash stream bound for the west side of Chamberlain Lake until the late 1920s.
