Small Rapids above the “Other Falls” before the “Falls Area” on the Rapids Trail in the Cathance River Nature Preserve in Topsham (2014)

The Cathance River Preserve is one of several preserves in Sagadahoc County.  Managed by the nonprofit Cathance River Education Alliance, it features summer camps, educational programs, and research.  Its Ecology Center is a learning facility that is itself a model of ecological sensitivity.

Located in Topsham, the preserve offers several trails available from dawn to dusk: Barnes Leap Loop, Beaver Loop, Heath Loop, Rapids Loop, and Ravine Loop.  All are about a mile or less and are designed to be accessible for walking.  Boots are useful in wet weather.
