1866 U.S. Navy Secretary orders steamer Winooski to Eastport, where it intercepted weapons that Fenians (Irish nationalists) planned to use to invade Canada.

1939

Municipal “right-to-know” law strengthened, requiring “all town books to be open for public inspection,” and that copies of financial reports be made and distributed to voters before the annual town meeting.

1964

Rachel Carson, former Maine resident and author of Silent Spring and other works that inspired the environmental movement of later years, dies.
