  1775   Battle of Lexington and Concord begins the Revolutionary War, now celebrated in Maine and Massachusetts as Patriots Day
  1800   Birth date in New Hampshire of Rufus Goodenow, who moved to Brownfield in 1802 and became a Whig member of Congress, serving 1851-1853.

  U.S. declares war on Spain, partially as a result of the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor on February 15th of that year.
  1993    Bangor man, David Thibodeau, survives the FBI assault on the Branch Davidian compound near Waco Texas. The cult was believed to be heavily armed. After several explosions, the compound was leveled by fire. 76 men, women and children died; 14 men and 21 children had been allowed to leave before the assault.
