Battle of Lexington and Concord begins the Revolutionary War, now celebrated in Maine and Massachusetts as Patriots Day

Birth date in New Hampshire of Rufus Goodenow, who moved to Brownfield in 1802 and became a Whig member of Congress, serving 1851-1853.

1898

U.S. declares war on Spain, partially as a result of the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor on February 15th of that year.
