James I, King of England, signs the first charter giving a company, the Virginia Company, the right to establish colonies on the shores of North America. This begins the process of establishing the Jamestown and Popham colonies.

Sidney Perham, a U.S. Congressman and Governor (1871-1874), dies in Washington, D C. The Aroostook County of town of Perham is named in his honor.

Kittery built U.S.S. Thresher sinks in a diving exercise, 220 miles east of Boston; all 123 aboard were lost.
